Once Upon a Time in Liverpool

by Jim Elliott

'It's Liverpool Jim. Just as I knew it!' - Billy Butler - BBC Radio Merseyside

" ONE SON IN THE 'HARMY', ONE SON IN THE NAVY AND ONE IN THE BAG!"

This the story of one mans early life and his extraordinary stepfather in Liverpool. Born in Everton on 12th February 1936 the author was the eldest son of Mary and James Elliott. His childhood, like many during the war, saw the separation of his parents and go their own way.

Hughie Smith was a well known character in Liverpool. He often performed his escapology and strongman act at the back of T.J.Hughes’ department store and at the Liverpool Pier Head. He became a frequent visitor to Jim Elliott’s home.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Jim did not take too kindly to the situation and, being the eldest, was protective of his family, yet came to accept Hughie, who eventually married his mother and treated all the family well, making his mother happy in the process.
His story, like many, contains sadness and happiness in good measure. He wrote it all down for you to enjoy and in memory of the loss of his 29 year old son, Jonathan.
